Conversion on the dance floor - A weekly report by an Israeli in Berlin
By Amit Epstein  |  07/10/2010

Being alert is a basic condition, for an Israeli; therefore I do not feel I need to change my behavior in spite of of the terror attacks prophesied all over the newspapers headlines of the last week

Alexander Platz, Adlon Hotel – surrounded by police forces? Hard to imagine, unless it's for some left-wing demonstration…yet, the power of a threat is incredible; now everyone in Berlin, London and Paris ask themselves how would that impact the tourists..? In the end comes always the financial side effect, to prove us how everything is politics. The truth is that war creates many jobs for uneducated men, which consistently need to be replaced as they die, is clear; the reality is that war is a secure business - that has been worldwide well established, but how did that happen, that terror attacks became so profitable (and for whom exactly?) that it is being encouraged and supported so vastly and globally? Is terrorism the fanatic-Muslims response to high-tech? Is it already an industry? Will it become an international sport?

I cannot even say I have a problem with that, or with the fact that there are people who think and believe it's a proper profession, a fine way to earn their living (on the counts of other's…) and I wouldn't be talking of any ethical standards or such humanistic ideas, if not for the fact that terrorists choose to justify their deeds with a moralistic agenda. I mean, if what you like doing is demolishing a tourists' attraction, a piece of momentous architecture or a luxurious resort, do it – by all means, why not? But please spare us the noble cause you convince yourself with, "freedom fighter". Noble causes need no demolition. In order to make a change, even if some destruction may be needed, or let's better call it deconstruction, it's mainly about building-up an sincere alternative. Until now I personally was not persuaded that terror accomplishes any positive progress, unless you are invested in the selling of newspapers. Will the exploded Alexander Platz help the acceptance of Muslims inhabitants in Europe? Will it improve the chances of the Palestinians to achieve diplomatic support? I'd be surprised; I think that at most, it will make some architects happy. Now, really, with all my respect and sympathy to architects, I ask myself if that is a reasonable enough motivation to go through such a bother..?
