One Million Russian Immigrants

The million people from the CIS who moved to Israel following the collapse of the communist empire led Israeli society to confront – with vigor – the need to grapple with the question of its identity and values. These immigrants, who came here under the Law of Return, over many years constituted a kind of reservoir of hope and vitality for the Jewish people. The hope of releasing them from the tyranny of communist rule fed a dream shared by the Jews of the Diaspora and the Israeli Jews, a dream for which they waged a determined struggle in order that it come to pass.
